A used bike can save you a large part of the price of a new one, but only if you check it properly before paying. This checklist covers what we look at ourselves when a customer asks us to help inspect a used motorcycle — print it or keep it open on your phone when you go to see a bike.
1. Know the fair price first
Before you visit any seller, compare similar bikes of the same model, year and condition. Browse the used bikes for sale on Jahangir Motors and check the current price of the same model new on our Honda or United pages. A used bike asking close to the new price rarely makes sense, and a price far below the market is a warning sign rather than a bargain.
2. Verify the seller and the documents
- The name on the registration book or smart card should match the seller's CNIC. If the bike is still in someone else's name, ask why and how the transfer will be completed.
- Ask for the original file: registration book or smart card, the original purchase invoice or sale certificate where available, and token tax receipts.
- Check that token tax is paid up to date and that there are no pending e-challans — unpaid dues can block the transfer. We can check e-challans and token tax for you.
- Be careful with bikes sold on an "open file" or transfer letter only. Until the bike is transferred into your name, you do not legally own it.
3. Match the engine number, chassis number and number plate
Find the engine number on the engine casing and the chassis (frame) number on the frame, and compare both character by character with the registration document. The number plate must match the registration number too. Scratched, re-punched or mismatched numbers are a reason to walk away.
4. Inspect the frame for accident damage
Look along the frame, around the steering head and under the fuel tank for welding marks, bends or fresh paint in one area only. Stand in front of the bike and check that the front wheel and handlebar line up straight. Uneven paint, a new part on one side only or a bent footrest often point to a fall or accident.
5. Check the engine — start it cold
- Ask the seller not to start the bike before you arrive. A cold engine shows starting problems that a warm one hides.
- Listen for knocking, rattling or a loud tappet noise once it is running.
- Watch the exhaust: bluish smoke usually means the engine is burning oil; thick black smoke points to a fuel-mixture problem.
- Look for oil leaks around the engine and ask when the oil was last changed.
- On the test ride, the clutch should not slip when you accelerate in a higher gear.
6. Mileage, tyres, battery, brakes and suspension
- Mileage: compare the meter reading with the bike's wear. A low reading with a worn seat, worn footrest rubbers and a worn chain and sprocket does not add up.
- Tyres: check the tread depth and look for cracks on the sidewalls.
- Battery and electrics: test the headlight, indicators, horn, brake light and the self start if the bike has one.
- Brakes: both brakes should stop the bike firmly without pulling to one side.
- Suspension: push down on the front and rear. Oil on the front fork tubes or a bike that keeps bouncing means the shocks need work.
7. Original parts
Many parts on popular models like the Honda CD 70 and Honda CG 125 are available as cheaper non-original copies. Some replacement is normal on an older bike, but a bike rebuilt mostly from non-original parts should be priced lower.
8. Take a proper test ride
Ride through all the gears, brake hard once at low speed, and ride over a rough patch to feel the suspension. Listen for new noises at higher speed. If the seller will not allow a test ride, think carefully before buying.
9. Pay safely and complete the transfer
Never send an advance payment, booking amount or deposit before you have seen the bike and its documents in person. Pay at the time the bike and its original documents are handed over, and get the ownership transferred into your name as soon as possible — in Punjab this includes biometric verification of both the buyer and the seller. Our bike transfer service handles the paperwork for you at our office in Adda Pipli, Vehari.
